Kirsten Z Cairns is a stage director, public speaker and singer who has worked extensively in opera, theatre and traditional music. She is based in Boston, Mass, where she has staged many shows and has lectured on literature, music, opera, art and crafts. She is currently Resident Stage Director for Intermezzo Chamber Opera New England. Critics have called her productions, ‘Astounding, phenomenal, superb’; ‘…so good you want to see it again, right away.’
Cairns is also a senior staffer for TheOneRing.net and has helped to organize many TORn ‘moots’ and panels. She is often seen at conventions (including Dragon*Con, San Diego ComicCon and New York ComicCon) and gatherings, both as a panelist for TORn and as a singer. Her renditions of ‘May it Be’ and ‘Into the West’ have been heard at DragonCon’s Evening at Bree (where she was delighted to perform with fan favourites Emerald Rose), and three years ago she teamed up with a professional story teller to give a presentation of traditional tales and songs from the ‘real Middle Earth’, as part of the Tolkien Track. In 2009, Cairns was an organizer and Master of Ceremonies for the day of talks and presentations which were given as part of the weekend long celebrations when The Fellowship of the Ring was shown at Radiocity Music Hall in New York. She worked with representatives from Columbia Artist Management to make this day run smoothly, and Doug Adams and Howard Shore, the day’s key presenters, were delighted with the event.
As well as speaking on many Tolkien panels, Cairns has had articles on all things Middle-earth (or matters geeky!) published both online and in magazines and books.
Before moving to America, Cairns studied singing in Scotland, and she brings her knowledge and experience of Scots song to the traditional music performances which are beloved of fans of all things Tolkien! As well as her Masters degree in singing, Cairns has degrees in English Literature and in Theatre, so she is a triple threat when it comes to discussing and exploring Middle Earth!
