At Purina, we're always investigating how technology can help enhance the future of pet care. That's why it was natural for us to partner with New York-based tech website Mashable to host a hackathon just for pet-related ideas.
Together we created the Tails and Rails Hackathon, a pet-friendly event that gathered 50 of New York's tech sector innovators and challenged them to create apps in the realm of pet food, pet adoption and pet recreation. The event took place on Saturday, February 23, at New York City’s Soho Grand Hotel. The developers showed up bright and early, many bringing their pets along, and worked for eight hours. Food was had, prototypes were made and numerous concepts were dreamed up.
At the end of the night, a panel of judges, including Editor-in-Chief of Digiday, Brian Morrissey; Founder of Mashable, Pete Cashmore; and Purina's Gordon Wade and Ginnie Seigel, chose the three best concepts:
A mobile app to help cat owners play with their cat from their office or while on vacation. We loved this idea because it promotes more interaction and play with your cat for people living a full, busy lifestyle.
A mobile app that allows your pet sitter to keep you in the loop on how your favorite pet is doing while you're away, using digital sharing. We love how this would allow pet owners to stay in touch with the pets they love.
A mobile application that lets people meet pets available for adoption in their area in non-shelter situations. We liked this idea because it empowers people to rescue pets by helping them make sure they're compatible in a real-world setting.
All of the best ideas will be considered for future tech innovations from Purina. We’re grateful for everyone who helped us push forward our thinking on how digital platforms can help connect people and pets.
What pet welfare means to us, and what we're doing to make a difference.
