Maine coon cats make delightful companions. Gentle and kind but independent, they are avid mousers and often enjoy playing a game of fetch with their owners.

Their name and coloring might suggest otherwise, but Maine Coon cats are not really the offspring of raccoons. However, the breed is native to the state of Maine, and is rugged enough to survive the harsh winters of northern New England. The cat’s resiliency is due to its heavy coat, sturdy build, tufted ears, and furry feet.

Legend has it that the Maine Coon cat descended from six of Marie Antoinette’s long-haired cats. The truth of this story is unknown, but the breed’s regal demeanor and appearance make it seem believable.
