A Veterinary Behaviorist is someone who deals with difficult behavior problems in dogs and cats. Becoming a Certified Behaviorist takes years and years of training, starting with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. Once the degree is finished, the trainee spends a year as an intern. After that, he or she goes on to spend two to three years in an approved residency training program in animal behavior.

But training doesn’t end there. Gerry Flannigan, a Behaviorist with Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Charlotte, explains, “there’s a process where you write an exam and become board-certified in Veterinary Behavior.”

After all that, the Behaviorist is finally ready to help your dog with its bad behavior issues.
