A puppy can learn to stay in any position - the standing-stay, the sit-stay, or the down-stay position.
To teach your dog, use a treat and praise to get him to lie down. Then attach a leash to his collar and stand on the lead so your puppy can’t get up. Say his name and the command, “stay!” After a few moments, give the release command and praise: “okay, good boy!” Lift your foot off the leash and reward your puppy with a treat.
Practice again and again - eventually leaving your foot off the leash and then ultimately with no leash at all. Once your pup has the hang of it, teach him to stay in other positions, and even when you’re around the corner, out of sight.
