How does a dog behave when it’s lost?

Listen

Some dogs have a natural instinct to roam—so if they can escape from the backyard and go exploring, they will. If they don’t wander too far, they’ll soon return home. But sometimes dogs chase after critters and end up lost. When this happens, some canines seem to have a built-in geographic information system, or GIS, and find their way home, whereas other, less-gifted dogs may wander around, looking for a sympathetic human.

Un-neutered male dogs may catch the scent of a female in heat, and end up lost trying to find her. And some dogs end up lost because their owners dump them. Whatever the reason, a lost dog will search for food, water, and shelter, but not always successfully.
