If you’re searching for a new veterinarian, you may have noticed that some animal doctors are credentialed as VMD’s, while others have a DVM after their name. What’s the difference?

In terms of expertise, a DVM and VMD are exactly the same. The only difference between the two is the veterinary school that granted the degree. Graduates of the University of Pennsylvania receive a VMD. The letters stand for the Latin words for “Veterinary Medical Doctor.” The DVM, on the other hand, is an abbreviation for “Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,” and is the degree granted by every other vet school. But aside from the name and granting institution, the degrees are absolutely equivalent.
