Are pets given anesthesia more frequently than humans? Why?

Listen

Pets and humans are given anesthesia before undergoing minimally invasive procedures and surgeries. But because we can’t explain to fido that he needs to stay still for a doctor, general anesthesia or sedation is used more often in veterinary medicine. According to Jeff Ko, a Veterinary Anesthesiologist at Purdue University, there are a variety of safe and effective ways to anesthetize animals. He says, “all the anesthetic protocols are relatively safe for puppies, kittens, all the way up to geriatric patients.”

To further minimize any risk to Fido, make sure to follow all of your veterinarian’s instructions for fasting or routine medication in the hours before you take your pet in for the procedure.
