What happens when a dog's intervertebral disks become damaged?

Listen

Shock-absorbing disks separate the vertebrae in your dog's spine. When these intervertebral disks become damaged, they are less able to act as cushions, and the resulting compression may lead to neurological problems in your pet. You'll notice that a dog with a herniated or ruptured disk is wobbly and uncoordinated.

An MRI or CT scan will determine the exact location and severity of the problem. Disk damage tends to occur in the middle of a dog's back, where there is less support for the spine.

Dog with short legs and long bodies are therefore more prone to intervertebral disk damage. So if you have a Dachsund or a Basset Hound, help him maintain a healthy weight so there is less pressure on his spine.
