If possible, get your dog accustomed to having his teeth cleaned at home on a regular basis when he’s still a puppy. Gently rub his teeth with a soft cloth or a child’s soft toothbrush, and use a toothpaste specially formulated for dogs. Do not use toothpaste made for humans. Because pets swallow rather than spit out the preparation, this can cause stomach upset.
Dry, crunchy foods can also be helpful in keeping teeth clean. As the dog chews, particles from the dry food scrape against his teeth, acting like a toothbrush to help remove plaque.
