The National Dog Show: Everything You Need to Know
The National Dog Show: Everything You Need to Know

Dogs of every breed, size, shape and haircut — what’s not to love about The National Dog Show? Even better, it airs on Thanksgiving. So grab your turkey, sit down with your pooch and get ready to watch. We want to help you get the most out of your dog show experience, so we put everything you need to know in one place. Just follow these steps and you’ll be a pro.

1. Share Your #DogThanking Story

This November, Purina wants to thank the four-legged friends who make our lives so special.  Purina is inviting dog owners to log on to Facebook, Twitter or Instagam and share why they are so thankful for their dog. For every post through 11/29 that includes @Purina and #dogthanking, Purina will donate one dollar to the AKC Canine Health Foundation – up to $75,000 – to further pet health research. Submitted videos, photos and posts may be shown during the National Dog Show Presented by Purina, which airs at noon (in all time zones) on Thanksgiving Day on NBC.

2. Get Your T.V. Ready

The dog show airs on NBC at 12 p.m. on Thanksgiving, which is November 26th this year. Did you know? Purina partnered with NBC and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia 14 years ago to start this show.

3. Print Out the Cheat Sheet

What’s a “sporting dog”? Why did the dog with the generous jowls win its group? So many questions can come up during a show like this. Grab our printable guide to become a go-to source on everything from the history of dog shows to just what judges are looking for, in five minutes tops.

4. Peek Behind the Scenes

“We laugh that it’s easier to get a master’s degree than to become a judge for the herding dogs group,” says Linda, a judge of two different breeds. Learn more about what it’s like to be a dog show judge or handler here.

5. Read Up on The Preferred Food of Champion Dogs

What’s in the bowl of dogs that take home the trophy? More likely than not, it’s Purina® Pro Plan®. Last year, 6 of the 7 group winners - including Best In Show - were Purina® Pro Plan®-fed dogs. The superior nutrition that Purina Pro Plan provides helps fuel many champion dogs. In fact, 94 of the top 100 all-breed show dogs in the country are fed Purina® Pro Plan®

6. Prepare to Be Dazzled

Dog shows like the National Dog Show remind us of the true potential of dogs. That’s why we love this time of year. Sit back, relax and get ready for a great show.
