Atlanta Solar Array
Our Atlanta plant is pushing forward our sustainability efforts with its new solar array.
What does the factory of the future look like? One aspect will be that it conserves energy, water and resources and uses renewable fuel options whenever possible. That’s the direction we’re heading in at Purina.
On May 8th, 2013, we were excited to hold a dedication for our newest and largest solar installation, a 450-kilowatt photovoltaic system of nearly 1,900 panels at our Atlanta Facility in Fairburn, GA. The amount of electricity produced annually by the solar array could power nearly 52 average-sized homes – or approximately 5,000 light bulbs – for a year. The project marks a collaboration between Purina and Georgia-based organization United Renewable Energy, LLC.
With the addition of the Atlanta solar array, we now generate 1 megawatt of solar power each year, some of which is returned to the local utility. While solar remains a small part of our energy mix, we hope to grow its impact year after year.
This event furthers our Atlanta plant’s tradition of leading the way in pet food manufacturing. Since opening in 1972, the plant has continued to grow and expand as a state-of-the-art facility, and currently employs over 300 people. The plant produces ALPO® dry dog food, Beneful® dry dog food, Purina® Cat Chow®, Purina® Dog Chow®, Fit & Trim® dog food, Friskies® cat food, Purina ONE® cat and dog food as well as Purina® Pro Plan® dry dog food.
To celebrate the new solar array, we invited special guests to join us. Attending were Fairburn mayor Mario Avery, representatives of both U.S. senators from Georgia, and members of the United Renewable Energy, LLC. During the ceremony, the Purina facility made a donation to the Douglas County K9 Unit.
We’re proud that our plant provides the region with high-quality pet food. We are also proud that we can produce those products in a resource-efficient way.
