The world of pet welfare goes far beyond shelter walls and into envisioning what we can do to create a better world for pets and the people who love them. Guided by a passion for pets, we’re committed to using our scale to do more than just donate.
We are dedicated to making sure the world gets to know shelter pets as they really are – friendly, attractive and wonderful lifelong companions. That’s why, in collaboration with shelters, we have created tools and resources to help more shelter pets get adopted.
As complete and balanced, high quality pet food is our biggest focus, it only makes sense that we would use it to feed shelter pets across the nation, giving them the nutrition they need to be healthy for their future families. We've invested over $19 million in pet welfare and pet communities across the country, with a portion of that going to pet food and litter donations. Nearly 6 million pounds –$19 million in retail value – of Purina pet food, treats and litter was donated to more than 940 animal welfare organizations in the U.S. in 2014.

We created “Meet the Real Me” to help shelters break down barriers that prevent potential pet owners from considering shelter pets. We’ve partnered with Shelter Me Photography and the Shelter Arts Foundation, to show how wonderful of pets shelter pets can really be. Our annual e-magazine and free toolkits provide shelters with access to expert advice.
In 2014, we forged a partnership with Rescue Bank to donate products from our plants and distribution centers to where they’re needed to support pet rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption in a more efficient way. Rescue Bank operates on the national food bank model to serve community-based animal rescues and shelters across America.
Petfinder collaborates with over 13,000 animal shelters and rescue organizations across North America to provide the largest searchable database of pets who need homes. Since its inception, Petfinder has helped find homes for more than 24 million pets.
The Michigan Humane Society created a revolutionary way to help more cats than ever find homes. They called their program Certified Pre-Owned Cats. The program guarantees that each cat is 100% ready to be in a loving home. Along with a touch of fun, the program helps adopters feel sure they're making the right choice.
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley finds homes for record amounts of pets, and operates a state-of-the-art facility. One of their efforts we think is the most exciting is their Behavior Modification Program, which uses positive reinforcement training to socialize the pets that come through their doors. Why train pets with shock collars and spray bottles when toys, rewards and affection work better?
Our partners at NSALA co-created the Mutt-i-gree program, which works with over 1200 schools across the country. Not only does it teach pet-loving children about the benefits of adopting a shelter pet, but it uses pets in the classroom to help kids understand one another, and learn to communicate how they feel. In some cases, the program has helped children with autism make strides in connecting to their teachers and making friends.
