The world of pet welfare and pet cause goes far beyond shelter walls and into rethinking what we can do to create a better world for pets and the people who love them. As a company guided by a passion for pets, we're committed to using our scale to do more than just donate. We want to work shoulder to shoulder with pet welfare experts, to inspire pet lovers to get more involved, to change perceptions of shelter pets and to create more powerful bonds between pets and people.
As complete and balanced, high quality pet food is our biggest focus, it only makes sense that we would use it to feed shelter pets across the nation, giving them the nutrition they need to be healthy for their future families. We've invested over $10 million in pet welfare and pet communities across the country, with a portion of that going to pet food and litter donations.
Did you know that less than a quarter of people thinking about getting a cat or dog consider visiting a shelter or rescue organization? That's because communications surrounding shelter pets often paint them as abused and unhealthy, while portraying shelters as dismal, dirty places. These images don't do justice to the innovative shelters full of caring people and lovable pets that we work with every day. That's why we're working to change perceptions with Purina ONE's fun and easy Facebook game, Bowl by Bowl, which feeds shelter pets while giving them the credit they deserve.

Part of advancing the pet welfare cause is inspiring different organizations to work together to utilize all of their strengths and help more pets find homes. That's why we work hard to help large and small organizations alike connect and share their wisdom, and to help members of different communities gain easier access to the pets that will change their lives.
We encourage people to adopt by sharing the many ways pets benefit our lives and exposing new ways for passionate people to lend a hand to their local pet welfare organizations.
We believe that bringing a pet into your life is the first step toward a bond that will make both of your lives better. But don’t just take our word for it. There’s plenty of research to back it up.
For example, the CDC says that having pets can reduce your blood pressure, in addition to decreasing feelings of loneliness, lowering cholesterol levels and encouraging physical activity.

Pets don't just improve people's lives - they improve communities. Did you know that having a pet present in the classroom can help alleviate tension and facilitate learning? Or that having a pet can help a patient recovering from trauma? Pets can do a lot for our communities - that's why we work hard to encourage communities to embrace the true potential of pets.
The Michigan Humane Society created a revolutionary way to help more cats than ever find homes. They called their program Certified Pre-Owned Cats. The program guarantees that each cat is 100% ready to be in a loving home. Along with a touch of fun, the program helps adopters feel sure they're making the right choice.
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley finds homes for record amounts of pets, and operates a state-of-the-art facility. One of their efforts we think is the most exciting is their Behavior Modification Program, which uses positive reinforcement training to socialize the pets that come through their doors. Why train pets with shock collars and spray bottles when toys, rewards and affection work better?
Our partners at NSALA co-created the Mutt-i-gree program, which works with over 1200 schools across the country. Not only does it teach pet-loving children about the benefits of adopting a shelter pet, but it uses pets in the classroom to help kids understand one another, and learn to communicate how they feel. In some cases, the program has helped children with autism make strides in connecting to their teachers and making friends.
