How often should I feed my dog?

Once you’ve chosen the right food for your dog and figured out how much you should feed him each day, you should develop a plan for how often to feed him. Not sure how often you should feed your dog? Here are some things to consider when you’re figuring out your dog’s feeding schedule.

Stick to a feeding schedule

Whether you feed your dog once or twice daily, make sure to feed him at the same time each day. Feeding your dog the same amount at the same time every day can help keep his digestive system regular. If you know exactly when your dog eats and drinks, you’ll have a much better idea of when he’ll need to go outside.

Wait until after your dog exercises

You wouldn’t eat a big meal before you go running, so don’t feed your active dog right before exercise. It’s best to feed an active dog a meal 10 to 12 hours before exercise so that he has time to digest.

Don’t overfeed your dog

No matter how many times a day you feed your dog, it’s important to make sure that you’re not overfeeding him.  Feeding your dog a consistent amount at specific mealtimes can help prevent weight gain. Instead of eyeballing or estimating how much you feed your dog at every meal, it’s a good idea to use a precise measuring cup.
