When do I stop feeding my dog puppy food?

Transitioning from Puppy Food to Adult Food

As a general rule, dogs that are less than one year of age are considered puppies and it is important during that year that they are being fed a puppy formula pet food.

There is some variation, however. Large and giant breed dogs are considered puppies until two years of age, while some toy breeds are considered to be adults at nine months of age.

Introducing Adult Food

Puppies are growing and developing every day, and require a food that meets those high-energy demands. As your puppy becomes an adult dog, you may need to adjust his diet.

You should begin slowly transitioning your puppy to adult food when he is one year old, or when your veterinarian recommends doing so. Spread out the transition process over a 7 to 10 day period, gradually increasing the amount of his new food each day.
