Did you know that pet food formulation is subjected to stricter standards than most human food?
Each pet food needs to meet federal (FDA) and state regulatory standards before it gets anywhere near your pet's bowl. Pet food companies can volunteer to follow the Association of American Feed Control O cials' (AAFCO) guidelines, which encourage pet food companies to conduct feeding trials to ensure their foods result in positive outcomes for pets.
At Purina, we see industry standards as just a starting place. Not only do all our products meet these standards – but most of them go beyond the requirements to provide optimal nourishment for pets.
Every supplier of our ingredients must meet our strict standards for ingredient speci cations, product safety, sanitation and manufacturing practices. This is no small task, as our standards are always rising due to our ongoing research and development of industry-leading quality assurance practices.
All of our North American manufacturing facilities have on-site quality assurance laboratories and sta . We're even expanding our use of technology to further screen ingredients for quality assurance. This helps us make sure that the ingredients we start with are exactly what we ordered, and live up to our high standards.
99% of our pet food products sold in the U.S. are made in our own plants. Our trained associates carefully monitor to ensure all our products live up to our high quality control standards. Purina's sophisticated tracking system ensures important measures of control: All raw ingredients are tracked from time of receipt at our plants, through their inclusion in finished products, and to your retail stores.
Did you know we're a global leader in pet nutrition research?
From nding out what drives obesity to studying the e ects of new trends and discoveries in human nutrition, we've got it covered! That's because we don't want to follow the industry – we want to push it forward. It's all part of our mission to enrich the lives of pets and enable them to live long, healthy lives.
Innovation drives everything we do at our Pet Care Center, where our feeding studies help to develop a better understanding of the natural preferences, nutritional needs and behaviors of dogs and cats. Our trained and caring sta treat our dogs and cats with respect and a affection, because we’re pet owners too.
When it comes to gaining a comprehensive knowledge of discoveries that can improve pets' lives, we think it's important to go beyond your own walls. That's why we partner with research organizations, from universities to health care foundations, and fund their most innovative research.
We don’t study ingredients in a vacuum.
We think the best ingredients are ones that aren't just good solo players, but excellent team players as well. That's because ingredients can o en enhance one another's performance. A smarter nutrient blend is going to be more digestible and e ective for a pet than a single ingredient. That's why we don't formulate our pet food on an ingredient by ingredient basis, but instead measure how di erent formulations a ect a pet's overall health.
O entimes trends are signals of advancement in our understanding of nutrition, but sometimes they're just passing fads. That's why we closely study human food trends to gain a holistic understanding of their nutritional impacts, and examine whether they're bene cial for a dog or cat's unique nutritional needs. If the numbers aren't there, we keep that fad away from our foods.
We believe game-changing nutrition should be available to pets everywhere. That's why we o er a wide range of products, which allows pet owners to choose a food that's right for their pet. We want every pet owner to feel con dent that their pet food meets or exceeds state and federal regulatory standards – but we also want every pet owner to feel con dent they've made the right choice.
We're equally passionate about pets who are still waiting for loving homes. Last year, you helped us donate $31,200,000 to more than 650 pet organizations!
