Rice Stewardship Partnership With Ducks Unlimited & U.S. Rice

In the last 50 years, the US has lost 17 million acres of wetlands. To help restore wetlands during winter months and provide migrating waterfowl with a place to rest and restore their energy, Ducks Unlimited and U.S. Rice are working with rice farmers, Purina and other partners to catch winter rains, creating wetlands. Waterfowl flock to these wetlands, eat fallen rice, fertilize the fields and contribute to a healthy ecosystem.

 Living Lakes

Living Lakes With Ducks Unlimited

Purina has partnered with Ducks Unlimited to protect and improve 1,600 acres of wetland and grasslands across Iowa over the next three years through the Living Lakes Initiative, promoting healthy soil, healthy crops and healthy wildlife habitat. Purina operates three pet food manufacturing facilities in Iowa, and we source high-quality ingredients for our dog and cat food products from farms across the state. We’re committed to helping promote sustainability of our supply chain and improve recreational use of wetlands and lakes across this region.

Rethink Soil

Rethink Soil With The Nature Conservancy

Farms across the Midwest have produced bountiful yields of commodity crops for many years and the soil is getting tired. By planting cover crops, rotating crops and other techniques, the soil is given a chance to regenerate which is good for the farmer, the land and water.

Nebraska Irrigation

Central Nebraska Irrigation Project With Cargill ™ & The Nature Conservancy®

Western states can be dry. As a result, irrigation is required to supplement rain for healthy crops. Irrigation is pumped from water bodies, including aquifers, deep below the ground. To use this finite resource most responsibly, Purina partnered with Cargill and The Nature Conservancy to provide technology to farmers to collect data on precipitation, humidity and soil moisture. Farmers can then manage their irrigation pivots from their smartphones. The project is expected to yield a savings of 2.4 billion gallons of water over just 3 years from 50 farms.
