Across the globe, there are several hundred distinct breeds of purebred dogs. Some of the newer dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club are the American English Coonhound, Cesky Terrier, Finnish Lapphund, and Russell Terrier. Newer dog breeds working their way to full recognition are the Coton de Tulear, Rat Terrier and Wirehaired Vizsla.
Mixed dog breeds, sometimes called designer dog breeds, are gaining popularity among pet owners. These hybrid breeds are the result of breeding two genetically dissimilar breeds. Unlike purebred dog breeds,
litters of designer dog breeds often produce dogs that look quite different, even in the same litter. Examples of designer breeds are the Labradoodle, combining the Labrador Retriever and Poodle, and the Puggle, a cross between the Beagle and Pug.
